📰 News

Massachusetts became the first New England state to allow social consumption establishments on January 2. Three license types: Supplemental (existing dispensaries add consumption areas), Hospitality (dedicated venues), Event Organizer (festivals and concerts). No alcohol or tobacco. Employees need impairment training. Towns must opt-in—expect 2027 before cafes open. Big shift for the local scene.

Ballot Initiative Threatens Industry

Campaign to eliminate recreational sales got 78,301 signatures certified. Legislature has until May 2026 to act. If rejected, it goes to November ballot. Would affect 27,000+ workers and the $1.6B market. No state has reversed legalization—yet this got this far.

Federal Rescheduling Stalled

Trump signed an executive order in December directing marijuana move from Schedule I to Schedule III. DEA filed paperwork saying process remains “pending.” No timeline. SAFE Banking bill still on hold despite bipartisan support.

🎪 Events

Cannabis Control Commission Public Meeting — Jan 29

Virtual meeting: social consumption implementation and regulatory updates. Open to public. masscannabiscontrol.com

The Flower Expo MA — Feb 12

Three County Fairgrounds, Northampton. B2B cannabis trade show with SESHES speaker series, educational panels, networking. Invitation-only for licensed pros.

Sign up for dispensary email lists for pop-ups and vendor days—announced 1-2 weeks ahead on social media.

💡 Note

Most dispensaries moved specials to loyalty apps, email lists, and social media. Call ahead or check websites before visiting. Deals change fast and some require membership.

🌿 Fun Facts

Cannabis plants can be either male or female (and sometimes hermaphrodites), but only female plants produce the resinous buds that people consume. Male plants produce pollen to fertilize females, but they don't develop the THC-rich flowers. This is why most growers focus on cultivating female plants, and "sinsemilla" (Spanish for "without seed") refers to unfertilized female flowers that put all their energy into producing cannabinoids instead of seeds, resulting in more potent buds!
